Chapter 12

The next morning, Jesse felt much better as he and Aria wandered towards Jared’s workshop. His step was slow but steady, and he felt his strength returning. Both were carrying cups of freshly brewed coffee, which smelled much better than tasted.

“Ah, good that you could come so fast. Jesse, how’s the wound?” Jared was sitting in his usual place with a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

“I’ll survive, feeling much better than yesterday.”

“Good, that medigel does wonders.” Cigarette ashes falling all over the table.

“Please sit down. Sorry for dragging you here so soon, but plans have changed, and we need to discuss.” Jared said, wiping most of the ashes from his familiar white shirt.

Jesse and Aria sat down opposite Luis, who was already sitting.

“All right, so here’s the deal,” Jared began, his voice low and serious this time.

“As you already know. We’re going to be breaking into the GenoCyde Corporation high-rise office building to steal that prototype chip I told you about. The thing is, we need to move much faster than I first let you know. I have learned through the source that they are about to rotate their guard roster after tomorrow.”

“How does that change anything? Isn’t it normal to rotate guards?” Jesse asked.

“After tomorrow, there will be double the amount of guards in the building. Which means we need to go in before that. If we are ever going to go.”

“Are we ready to do it this fast? Is your source reliable?” Jesse asked, pressing his wound that sent some signals to remind Jesse of its existence.

“We have all the equipment and the people we need. What we need to skip is the training. As for the source, it should be reliable.”

Jesse nodded, shifting his position, which caused him to wince in pain.

“We need to get you drugged up for the mission. You need to act without pain. Luis, do we have enough pills to do it?” Jared asked.

“I think so, and with the medigel, the wound should be much better tomorrow,” Luis said.

“Good. So, are you guys in? Even with this new schedule? There is more risk for sure, but the rewards are too good to pass.”

“Well, we have come this far. Nothing to lose. I will do my best to help you.” Jesse replied, turning his gaze towards Aria.

“It’s the same for me. I can’t go back now, can I?” She said.

“Good. We have our team then. Solara will also be part of it, and we have a driver and one more gunman you haven’t yet met, but they are good people,” Jared said.

“Should we go through the plan, then?” Jesse asked.

“Luis, can you fetch the rest of the team? I don’t want to go through this many times.”

After some time and a few more cups of coffee, Solara and the two men stepped in. The other of the men was a huge, burly man. Jesse recognized he had several military-grade modifications installed. He had replaced his other eye with an artificial aiming optic, and several under-the-skin wires circled his body.
